Only the cathedral seems to rise unscathed above the ruins. When the Cologne residents who had fled the city returned, it was the sight of the cathedral towers that brought tears to their eyes; it was Ostermann&#8217;s lines that crossed their lips.   It seemed like a miracle to the people at the time that the cathedral was still standing &#8211; even after more than 80 bomb hits.  <\/p><p>On May 8, the end of the war in Europe and the liberation from the Nazi dictatorship will once again be commemorated. The extent of the destruction throughout Europe and also in Cologne at that time is almost unimaginable. However, traces of the war and the Nazi era can still be found in many places in Cologne today.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-72b08a5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"72b08a5\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f99511d elementor-widget-mobile__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f99511d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Where the legacy of war is still visible today<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da9d3c8 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"da9d3c8\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2183eb4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2183eb4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A glance down at the sidewalk is often enough when walking. There are countless <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stolpersteine.eu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stumbling stones<\/a> throughout the city that commemorate the deported and murdered Jews, Sinti and Roma and politically persecuted people of Cologne. <\/p><p>However, it would be years before the streets could be used again after the war. The people of Cologne at the time gradually removed the rubble in painstaking work until the actual reconstruction could begin. However, the unbelievable amounts of rubble had to go somewhere first. A pragmatic Cologne solution was found: the rubble was piled up in huge heaps around the city center and planted. By 1960, eleven piles of rubble had been created.     These include the hill at Aachener Weiher and the Herkulesberg, also known as &#8220;Mont Klamott&#8221; &#8211; from which, incidentally, you have the best view of the cathedral today.  <\/p><h4>Romans and bunkers<\/h4><p>Right <em>next to<\/em> the cathedral stands one of the largest structures from the war, albeit almost invisible: the cathedral bunker. When it was built in 1941, the huge Roman Dyonisos mosaic was found here. It can still be viewed at the site where it was found. In the Roman-Germanic Museum, which was simply placed on top of the bunker in the 1970s, thus hiding it.   <\/p><p>Other former air raid shelters are also barely recognizable as such today. For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuladig.de\/Objektansicht\/KLD-345918\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high-rise bunker<\/a> on Breslauer Platz, which could easily pass for a modern office building with its glass cladding. Others disguise themselves with their towers as &#8220;church bunkers&#8221;. One of this type can be found in M\u00fclheim on Berliner Stra\u00dfe and now houses a <a href=\"https:\/\/kulturbunker-muelheim.de\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cultural center<\/a>. The Ehrenfeld bunker in <a href=\"https:\/\/bunkerk101.de\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">K\u00f6rnerstra\u00dfe<\/a> is also used for cultural purposes, mainly for exhibitions and art markets.    <\/p><h4>TimeRide Cologne 1945<\/h4><p>It was a long way before these relics of the war could be put to such use.
