Hardly any other season suits the Five Lakes Region as well as fall: In the morning, fog often still hangs over the Ammersee, while the surrounding forests have long since turned colorful, and if you’re lucky, you can even see the snow-capped Alpine peaks on the horizon from Andechs. A trip to Andechs Abbey is a worthwhile destination in itself, but if you’d like to explore the Ammersee with children, there’s much more to discover in the region. The hike from Herrsching to Andechs is particularly popular and can be easily managed even with younger children. 1) Hike from Herrsching to Andechs
The trail along the Kienbach, which is about 5 km long, is well-marked, mostly shaded, and easily manageable even with a stroller or bicycle. The route winds gently uphill through the forest and past small waterfalls, offering plenty of opportunities to catch your breath and explore along the way. If you arrive in Herrsching by S-Bahn, you can start the hike without a car and reward yourself at the end with a well-deserved snack at the monastery beer garden—a family outing that combines exercise in the fresh fall air with a rewarding destination.

2) Ammersee
A walk along the shore or a short boat ride are must-do activities around Andechs, especially on clear autumn days when the Alps are visible on the opposite shore. Several flat, family-friendly trails run around the lake, which even younger children can easily manage. If you’d like, you can combine your lakeside walk with a stop at one of the lakeside cafés or take one of the passenger boats that run between the towns along the lake—a relaxing addition to your hike to Andechs.

3) Pilgrimage Church and Monastery Brewery
The onion-domed tower of the pilgrimage church is visible from a distance and marks the destination of virtually every tour of Andechs. Inside, visitors are greeted by magnificent Baroque décor that impresses even children with its golden ornaments and ceiling frescoes. After the tour, the monastery brewery’s large beer garden right next door beckons with Bavarian snacks, house-brewed beer, and—when the weather is nice—a view of the surrounding countryside—the classic way to end a trip to the Holy Mountain.

4) The Five Lakes Region
For anyone looking for even more nature: Numerous hiking and biking trails around Lake Ammersee, Lake Starnberg, Lake Wörth, and the region’s smaller lakes invite you to explore further. The landscape is mostly flat to gently rolling, making it ideal for longer family bike rides, with plenty of swimming spots, scenic overlooks, and cozy inns along the way where you can take a break. Especially during fall break, when it gets busier on the weekends, a midweek trip is well worth it to enjoy the region in peace.
